Myler Bits Western Dee With Hooks MB43LP Myler Bits Western Dee With Hooks MB43LP has a narrow low port and option to attach reins in slot or hook. It is a 3" circular ring with a fixed attachment of the mouthpiece and top and bottom rings ("hooks") for headstall and rein attachment. There is direct rein action when the rein hook is not used. When the rein is fixed on the rein hook it is indirect action. It is used primarily in Western riding disciplines.
These unique Myler Bits Western Dee with Hooks MB43LP were recently designed by Myler Bits and Tom Wicklund of Performance Horse Arena in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon tested the bit on his training horses to give Myler some input before it was released. Tom Wicklund is in the photo riding the bay horse in this bit. The small ring on the top of the bit ring is a bit different. It is designed so the curb strap sits higher than normal. This positioning of the curb strap is encourages to the horse to flex at the poll and give to the bit.
It is a Stainless Steel Western Dee with 2 Hooks and Sweet Iron Copper Inlay. This mouthpiece is made of polished Sweet Iron which naturally oxidizes or rusts. Harmless to horses, it has a sweet taste and promotes salivation.
The Myler Bit Western Dee w/Hooks has an unique ring to attach the leather curb strap. The special hooks or snaps are included in the Leather Curb KIt 89-0042 by Myler. It is highly recommended to use this Leather Curb Kit with this bit.
"I really like how it is designed for several reasons; the bit has a lot of pre-signal to it from the lateral movement in the mouthpiece to the travel of the rein and too the location of the curb strap is higher up and makes for better contact on the jaw bone."
"This bit works very well with the way I train and makes for an excellent transition from the level 1 bits to level 2 - 3 bits. This bit has become my #1 bit of choice for all of my horses. I do have different mouth pieces to use depending on how far along the horse is but all of them make it much easier for the horse to find his natural head set while allowing me to be easy or soft with my hands. Also, this bit gives a much better signal to the horse when teaching him/her to back up and stop." - Tom Wicklund, Performance Horse Arena
The addition of the hooks to the cheek make this a more versatile bit. When the headstall is attached to the top hook, it holds the bit in the correct position instead of allowing it to slide around the bridle cheeks. Attaching the reins to the rein hooks allows the rider to lift the cheek and use the Independent Side Movement of the mouthpiece (if available). Using the hooks does not add leverage.
Myler Bit Level 2-3
Stainless Steel Western Dee with 2 Hooks with Sweet Iron Low Ported Barrel Narrow (MB 43LP, Level 2-3) Copper Inlay Mouth.
This mouthpiece is made of polished Sweet Iron which naturally oxidizes or rusts. Harmless to horses, it has a sweet taste and promotes salivation.
The 43LP is a curb mouthpiece that does not rotate on to the tongue, but sits solidly across the bars and lips of the mouth. The port offers room for the tongue to pass under the bit easily. Because the port is narrow, when the reins are engaged the horse will feel a slight pressure on the outside edges of the tongue as a gentle reminder rather than a strong reprimand.
A Myler Level Two-Three horse could:
Have basic training and a solid disposition and good self control
Have advanced training but with a disposition that requires more control
Be overly bold, timid, excitable or have a tendency to spook
Be training in a discipline that requires tongue relief tempered with precise control
Be training for Endurance, Barrel Racing, Jumping or similar
Be ridden in a Level Two bit and showing resistance
